Before & After Edits of Beach Photos | Oklahoma City Photographer Feb 2017

I took these photos last May when we visited North Padre Island in Texas.  We took a quick family trip down there for Memorial Day weekend.  It was perfect.  Both of these photos were taken the evening we arrived.  We took a walk down to the beach right around sunset.  We didn’t get to stay long, but that didn’t stop the kiddos from having a great time in the sand!

I haven’t been using Photoshop for long.  Maybe three years now.  In the beginning I only did very basic edits, but I wanted to learn more so I would watch youtube video after youtube video, I bought several Break Outs from Clickin Moms, I searched the internet for anyone giving any advice, photoshop or photography related, I read every article I could.  You name it, I did it all.  Some days I thought I was really making progress and the next I just wanted to give up.  I eventually started using actions from CoffeeShop Blog.  They are all free so if you are just starting out, this is a great place for you!  After using their actions for a while, I decided to make my own and I used those for several months.  For a little over a year now I have hand edited all of my photos in Camera Raw.  I’m still not where I want to be, but I am much closer than I was this time last year.  I think my problem is there are so many different looks that I love and I have a hard time picking just one.  GASP!  Every article I read says you must have one look and stick with it.  I get it, I really do.  It’s just hard.  LOL.  At the beginning of the year, I broke down and bought the Innocence Collection from Greater Than Gatsby.  Honestly, the only reason I bought the collection was because it was on sale.  It popped up on my Facebook newsfeed and I was like “sure, I’ll buy that”.  I have played around with them quite a bit and I really do like a lot of them.  I still edit my client work by hand, but I have been using the GTG for a good deal of my personal photos lately.

So for the two photos below I used Savory Film, Moody, Sand and Water Brushes, and Contrast Classic.  I also added in the pink and blues for the sky.

I know the photos aren’t perfect.  I wish I would have angled a little different so their heads didn’t cut through the horizon, but that’s ok.  I look at the photos and remember the great evening we had and that’s all that matters  🙂

I’m not really sure why I love black and white photography so much.  Probably because ages ago my very first photography class was Black & White Film.  Yep, that’s right.  Film.  I loved that class so so much.  One day I plan on getting back into film.  I would love to have my own little darkroom.  #goals.  Anyway, I guess I’m just drawn to black and whites because of that class.  I especially love black and whites of my kiddos.

We were staying at a hotel in Dumas, Texas, when I snapped these photos of my kiddos.  We were waiting for a thunderstorm to pass by so we could go swimming.  I think there was even a tornado just south of our location that day.  Crazy times!  Jack was probably 18 months old and LOVED playing under the sheets.  He still does, actually.  Katie was wearing the cutest little “Little Mermaid” bikini.  Both were taken with my Canon 6d using natural light from the huge hotel window.
